Cervical dysplasia refers to abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix, most often detected through Pap smears or HPV testing. These changes can be mild to severe and are considered pre-cancerous. Left untreated, they may increase the risk of developing cervical cancer. Management typically includes close monitoring, colposcopy, and treatments to remove abnormal cells and prevent progression.

Non-Surgical Treatment that Works

For many women with cervical dysplasia, surgery isn’t the only option. We offer topical Imiquimod treatment. This is an evidence-based, non-invasive treatment that activates your immune system to target abnormal cells without cutting or burning.

    Imiquimod stimulates your body’s immune response to remove abnormal cervical cells. It’s applied topically in a controlled setting, usually over several weeks, and has been shown in studies to be effective in treating moderate cervical dysplasia.

    As a direct primary care practice, we believe in personalized, patient-centered care. For the right candidates, Imiquimod offers a well-tolerated, non-surgical alternative that preserves cervical tissue and may reduce long-term complications.

Cervical Dysplasia FAQs
What is cervical dysplasia?
Cervical dysplasia means that some of the cells on your cervix look abnormal. It’s not cancer, but it can become cancer over time if left untreated. That’s why careful monitoring and early treatment are so important.
Is cervical dysplasia caused by HPV?
Yes. In most cases, cervical dysplasia is caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Many women will contract HPV at some point, and most infections go away on their own—but in some cases, the virus causes abnormal cell changes in the cervix.
What happens after an abnormal Pap smear?
If your Pap smear shows abnormal cells, we may recommend additional testing such as an HPV test or a colposcopy. These help us better understand the type and extent of the cell changes and guide next steps.
What is a colposcopy?
A colposcopy is an in-office procedure where we closely examine your cervix using a special magnifying device. If we see any areas of concern, we may take a small biopsy. It usually takes about 10–15 minutes and is similar to a Pap smear in terms of positioning.
Will I need treatment?
Not always. Mild dysplasia may just require monitoring. If cell changes are moderate or severe, we may recommend treatments such as topical medications or procedures to remove the abnormal cells and prevent progression.
Can cervical dysplasia affect fertility or pregnancy?
Most women treated for cervical dysplasia go on to have normal, healthy pregnancies. If treatment is needed, we’ll discuss the safest and most conservative options that protect your reproductive health.
Do I need to be a member of your practice to be treated?
No. Cervical dysplasia services are available to all patients. A Hitchcock Family Medicine membership is not required.
How do I get started?
You can schedule a consultation even if you’re not a current patient. We’ll review your results, walk you through the process, and work together on a plan that fits your comfort level.
